Northumberland Chocolate Milk: A Natural Sports Drink Chocolate milk has scored a victory as a sport recovery drink. A study at Indiana University published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism 1 found when athletes drank low fat chocolate milk after an intense bout of exercise they were able to work out longer during a second round of exercise compared to when they drank a carbohydrate replacement beverage. Exercise kinesiology professor Joel Stager and co-workers at Indiana University in Bloomington declared they had stumbled upon the perfect drink for elite athletes recovering their energy after strenuous exercise. That beverage is chocolate milk. Chocolate milk beat out the carbohydrate-replacement drinks and equaled the fluid replacement drinks that most jocks think of chugging after a big game, race, competition or workout. Carbohydrates are the most important factor in the short term for replenishing the energy and refueling the muscles after a vigorous exercise, sports nutritionalists say. Protein is also important for recovery. It provides amino acids for the building and repair of muscle tissue. A little protein might give an athlete a performance edge by enhancing insulin release, which aids in the transport of carbohydrates to the muscles. Researchers theorize that the optimal ratio of carbohydrates to protein in chocolate milk may be an effective alternative to commercial sports drinks for recovery after intense workouts. 1.
