Cows start to make milk after they have had a calf. Even
after the calf no longer needs the cow's milk, the cow continues
to produce milk. In fact, milk cows produce up to 30 litres or 8
gallons of milk per day.
Dairy farms today are very modern; cows go to a milking
parlour where they are milked. The milk is cooled and pumped into
a large storage tank. There are many quality procedures in place
including testing the milk to make sure it is safe to drink. A truck
comes to the farm every other day to pick up the raw milk. The tank
on a milk
truck is insulated to keep the product at the proper holding temperature.
The milk is transported to Northumberland Dairy's manufacturing
plant for processing and packaging.
